Hello, my name is Vaishali

"There is no good or evil; only power, and those too weak to seek it."

During the the first true confrontation between Harry and Voldemort in the Novel written by  J K Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Voldemort utters what I believe is the most iconic phrase in all of the series. Harry is attempting to hide a magical stone from Voldemort, the man who killed his parents in cold blood. This stone has the potential to bring Voldemort back to power.

The first time I read the book I glossed over it. I barely even registered what importance the quote could possibly have to me, or my view on life. However when I was at the end of third grade I began to read the series once again. It was during this time when my father started to introduce me to philosophy. He began listening to Dr. Wayne Dyer in the car when he took me to and from my various extra curricular activities. Perhaps it was fate or just a gigantic coincidence, as I was reading that very chapter in The Sorcerers Stone something remarkable was spoken by Dr. Dyer. He asked "What happens when you squeeze an orange? You get orange juice because that is what is inside. Well, what happens when you squeeze a person? You get what ever was inside." That got me thinking, if there really is no good or evil and the only reason Voldemort acted that way is because of how he was treated. That means everything I had ever believed about right and wrong could be incorrect as well.

As you could imagine that would be revolutionary, especially for a third grader. After that I began to be almost obsessed with understanding why. Why would my teachers say certain words over others, why does my brother just love Ben Ten, why do people laugh at others misfortune? It snowballed from there, I began to watch crime TV shows and read crime related novels, I even cracked open open several nonfiction texts searching for my answers.  I'm sorry to say I still haven't found any but along the way I have gained a passion for understanding why people do what they do.

I plan on becoming Criminal Psychologist when I am an adult. A criminal psychologist is neutral. Their personal beliefs aren't a concern, they are tasked with understanding why the perpetrator acted as such. So if I were to become one I wouldn't be looking for good or evil, only what people have done and the reasons why. What still amazes me in the end is that this is a true story and it all started with one line in an amazing book.
